Yarnaholics Alert – Popular funky wool show returns for sixth year!

Following the success of our previous five events, Waltham Abbey Wool Show is established as an annual event and is proud to be the first UK wool show of the year. Diana Bensted of The Crochet Chain and Kate Towerzey of AboutMyArea EN9 community website have joined forces again to organise the sixth show on Sunday 20th January 2019 at Waltham Abbey Marriott Hotel, Old Shire Lane, Waltham Abbey, EN9 3LX from 10am to 4pm.

Enjoy a luxurious and inspirational day out, browsing luscious hand-dyed yarns, beautiful handmade wool and felt items, unique knit and crochet kits, a wide selection of accessories from buttons to crochet hooks for sale, demonstrations of spinning, rag-rugging, weaving and Big Knitting. Opportunity to meet creative exhibitors and craft artisans. Plus a selection of interesting craft workshops for visitors will be available to book in advance.

Our Best Funky competitions have proved popular in previous years, the 2019 competition will be “Best Funky Hats” and the organisers are encouraging people to bring along their handmade knit, crochet or felt creations (no pre-registration needed – judging will be held at 12.30pm on the day). Visitors may wish to bring along their latest knit or crochet project to enjoy a relaxing time creating in the company of others on the day. There will be plenty of seating available as the wool show takes over the whole hotel!

This show is not just for those addicted to wool, it is for anyone who appreciates good quality hand-made items. There will be colourful array of unique hand-crafted products looking for a new home.

The show will be opened by the knitwear designer and writer of popular blog “Everyday Knitter” Louise Tilbrook with the official ribbon cutting at 10am.  She will also judge the competition at 12.30pm. Our chosen charity for the 2019 show is Knit for Peace, donations of any knitted or crocheted items or yarn will be gratefully received on the day.

Diana Bensted of The Crochet Chain: “We are pleased to hear we have the reputation as one of the friendliest wool shows with passionate exhibitors who love to share their expertise. We know there are modern, exciting, talented new designers and creators out there and we are delighted that WAWS gives us the opportunity to showcase and share the fabulous yarnie businesses we love with our visitors”.

Kate Towerzey, Site Editor of AboutMyArea community website and joint organiser of the wool show: “I cannot believe we will soon be hosting our sixth wool show!  We are working hard to create a memorable and enjoyable day for our visitors that puts Waltham Abbey on the map of yarn events. Looking forward to welcoming back our fabulous exhibitors who have supported us over the years, who we now regard as friends, plus excited to welcome a few new first time exhibitors to our 2019 show”.

So remember to hold on to your Christmas money, come along and treat yourself to one of the workshops or enjoy a delicious Sunday Roast Carvery Lunch or Afternoon Tea!  Booking advised directly with the Marriott hotel on 01992 717170.  There will be free parking all day for show visitors.

Advance tickets are available to purchase now on-line via the Waltham Abbey Wool Show website at the reduced entry cost of £4.50, although tickets will be available to purchase on the day too at £5.00 each. Entry tickets are also available to purchase in advance from Waltham Abbey Tourist Information Centre on Highbridge Street.

There will be 9 workshops, which are only available to book online, at £15 each for 90 mins from beginners to intermediate level – full details of 2019 show workshops available on our website. Any remaining places will be sold on a first come first served basis on the day of the show.  However, we recommend booking workshops in advance to avoid disappointment as most sell out.

About our VIP Guest – Louise Tilbrook

Louise Tilbrook is the enthusiastic knitter and pattern designer of Louise Tilbrook Designs and writer of the popular “Everyday Knitter” blog.

She is an enthusiastic sock knitter and pattern designer of socks, shawls, gloves and mittens.  She believes you can never have too many handmade items in your wardrobe!

Louise returned to knitting a few years ago, after learning as a child and once she discovered Ravelry she rapidly moved on from sweaters and scarves to shawls, socks and a whole host of other exciting projects.

Socks (and lovely hand dyed sock yarn) have become her first love though and over time this passion has expanded into pattern designing and teaching and now consumes most of her waking thoughts.

One of the things she loves most about knitting is the community, whether its online through KALs or at fibre festivals and meet ups, she is never happier than when she is talking with other knitters or crafters.  She is proud to work and support UK independent dyers and yarn producers and she feels very lucky to be part of such a vibrant and supporting community – “Knitters Rock”!

Her patterns can be found for sale in her Ravelry store, Patternfish and Love Knitting.
