SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS |
Silks of Life: an Exhibition of Chinese Costume
1 May – 30 June 2009
This stunning exhibition of exquisite silks and embroideries visits Waltham Abbey as part of its tour through Essex. Featuring historic textiles and costumes from the collections of Saffron Walden and the Warner Textile Archive, the exhibition uses objects to explore the customs, traditions and symbolism of Chinese culture.
Part of the Essex Jiangsu festival
The Great War
18 July - 22 September 2009
This exhibition commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Treaty of Versailles, the formal end to The Great War of 1914 to 1918. Described at the time as ‘the war to end all wars’, the enormous loss of life and huge sacrifices made by those fighting overseas and on the home front should not be forgotten. The exhibition features some fascinating material from the museum’s collection and the opportunity to experience a re-created front-line trench.
A Renaissance funded touring exhibition
